}1 # Decision: Test-double strategy (S5) 2 3 Pattern: rotating devil's advocate, decision 3 of 3 (seat: Marisol Ferran). Proposer: Renata Cole. 4 5 ## Proposal 6 7 Hand-written interface fakes (not generated mocks) for DAO/handler tests — the `Repository` composite and its three sub-interfaces are small and stable enough that a fake struct with configurable fields/funcs per test is less overhead than adopting a codegen tool (`gomock`/`mockery`) for this scope. 8 9 ## Objections — Marisol Ferran (Enthusiast) 10 11 1. **Interface drift is silent with hand-written fakes.** A new interface method still compiles against a stale fake, which silently zero-values it instead of failing a test that should catch the gap. Generated mocks fail loudly or leave a visibly regenerated stub. Marisol's own mitigation: enforce fake regeneration in the same PR as any interface change, as a review checklist item — makes drift a procedural risk, not a tooling one. 12 2. **Call-count/ordering assertions are free with mocks, hand-rolled with fakes.** Conceded this is likely moot here — S2–S4's test cases are table-driven input/output, not call-sequencing assertions. 13 3. **Legibility to a reviewer** — conceded weak by Marisol herself: a 3-method, ~20-line fake is faster to read and trust than looking up `mockgen` syntax, for a project this size. 14 15 Marisol's own assessment: objection 3 doesn't hold at this scale; objections 1 and 2 are real at scale but this project may not have that scale. 16 17 ## Ruling (Renata Cole) 18 19 **Hand-written fakes stand** — objection 3 was conceded by its own author, and objection 2 doesn't apply given the table-driven test shape already committed to in S5. Objection 1 is real but has a cheap procedural fix, which is adopted rather than reaching for a codegen dependency to solve it. 20 21 Adopted: any change to `Repository` or its three sub-interfaces must update the corresponding hand-written fake in the same PR — added as a stated review-checklist item for S2/S5, not left as an assumed discipline. This is the review-time equivalent of what a generated mock would catch automatically, at zero added dependency cost. 22 23 ## Status 24 25 Ruled. No codegen/mocking library added to the module. Carries into S5 as a review-checklist line item. 26 27 --- 28 Model: sonnet (Marisol Ferran, objection seat; Renata Cole, lead, proposer + ruling). Turns consumed: 1 hire turn + lead synthesis. 29

The Postgres/CockroachDB phone CHECK ('^\\+[1-9][0-9]{1,14}$', 2-15\n total digits) and the SQLite phone CHECK (length BETWEEN 8 AND 16,\n 7-15 total digits) accepted different sets — \"+1234\" (5 digits)\n passed on Postgres/CockroachDB and failed on SQLite, from the same\n input. Fixed by narrowing the Postgres/CockroachDB regex to\n '^\\+[1-9][0-9]{6,14}$' (7-15 total digits), matching SQLite exactly.\n SQLite's own CHECK is unchanged.\n\n2. GetByUsername folded case three different ways for one uniqueness\n guarantee: Go's strings.ToLower (Unicode-aware) on the query argument,\n plus SQL LOWER() on both sides of the comparison (locale-aware on\n Postgres, ASCII-only on SQLite) — three implementations of one rule\n that could disagree with each other and with the LOWER(username)\n index they're supposed to match. Removed the Go-side strings.ToLower\n call in both backends; the fold now happens entirely in SQL, the same\n expression that builds the index, so index and lookup agree by\n construction within a backend. Residual, accepted and named\n (unchanged from the existing non-ASCII search-folding gap): non-ASCII\n usernames still fold differently between engines.\n\nTwo new conformance assertions added (§7's fifth and sixth): phone\naccepted/rejected identically at the 6/7/15/16-digit boundaries across\nall three backends; two usernames differing only by ASCII case\ncolliding on GetByUsername lookup (not just on create-time uniqueness,\nwhich was already covered) on every backend.\n\nVerified against real Postgres 16, real CockroachDB v23.2.0, and\nmodernc.org/sqlite — go test ./... green, including both new assertions\nand the full existing suite (no regressions).\n\nStory: contract amendment A6 (05-data-ops/multi-db-strategy.md)\nWork-By: Renata Cole (lead); defect found by Yusuf Karadag (05), ruled\nby Priya Nandakumar (05 lead)\n\nCo-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>\nClaude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_011Cuba4JUvrsQCrTdUj4yzk\nEOF\n)\""

SQLite's migration is unchanged.\n- `internal/dao/postgres/credentials.go`, `internal/dao/sqlite/credentials.go`: removed the Go-side `strings.ToLower` call in `GetByUsername` — the fold now happens entirely in SQL (`LOWER(username) = LOWER(?)`), the same expression that builds `uq_user_credential_username`'s index, so index and lookup agree by construction within a backend.\n- `internal/dao/conformance`: two new assertions — `TestConformance_PhoneE164BoundaryParity` (the same phone string accepted/rejected identically at the 6/7/15/16-digit boundaries across all three backends) and `TestConformance_UsernameCaseInsensitiveLookup` (two usernames differing only by ASCII case both resolve to the same row via `GetByUsername`, on every backend — distinct from the existing duplicate-username-on-create test, which only proves the uniqueness constraint fires, not that a differently-cased lookup finds the row afterward).\n\n## Verification\n\n`go build`/`go vet` clean. `go test ./...` green against real Postgres 16, real CockroachDB v23.2.0, and `modernc.org/sqlite`, including both new assertions and the full existing suite (no regressions).\n\n## Who did the work\n\n- **Yusuf Karadag** (05 Data Ops, Detail Hawk) — found both defects, reading the contract rather than running anything.\n- **Priya Nandakumar** (05 Data Ops, lead) — ruled amendment A6.\n- **Renata Cole** (03 Engineering & Delivery, lead) — this fix and verification.\n- Model: Claude Sonnet 5, via Claude Code.\n\n🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)\n\nhttps://claude.ai/code/session_011Cuba4JUvrsQCrTdUj4yzk\nEOF\n)\""

"description": "Check migration-approach.md's numbering/versioning convention"
}7:Status: **final.** The devil's-advocate objection turn (story S4 in `./PLAN.md`) ran and raised six objections; all six were accepted. The two I named as most worth attacking — the tool choice and the single-runner requirement — were indeed where it landed: R2's *conclusion* survived but its *reasoning* was wrong and has been replaced, and R3 was found to be checking one version number where §2 creates two. Dispositions: `./decisions/migration-approach-objections.md`. 9:## 1. Tool: goose 11:**goose** — a Go command-line migration runner that applies numbered `.sql` files in order and records which have been applied in a version table inside the target database. Plain-SQL-first, minimal dependencies. Reasoning is in `./multi-db-strategy.md` and `./research-data-ops-best-practices.md` §3: this schema is "mostly shared DDL, occasionally per-backend", and goose's loose directory model fits that better than golang-migrate's stricter paired up/down files. golang-migrate is an equally defensible tool and I will not contest a swap if 03 already has tooling preferences — **nothing in §3–§6 below changes if the tool changes — with one named exception**: §2's two-invocation mechanism uses goose's `-table` flag, so a swap to golang-migrate means re-deriving how two independent version sequences are kept apart. That is the tool-independence claim's only load-bearing use, and pretending otherwise would be the kind of small overclaim this document is otherwise trying to avoid. Atlas is the schema-as-state alternative worth knowing about; it is more than this take-home needs. 13:Version numbering: timestamped filenames during development (avoids collisions when two branches add a migration), converted to a clean sequential 001/002/003 series with `goose fix` — the subcommand that renumbers timestamped files — **before the migrations have been applied anywhere that persists.** That cutoff is the important half: renumbering after application rewrites history the version table already records, so `goose fix` is a pre-first-application step, not a tidy-up before tagging. Not a decision 04 needs to act on — noted so nobody "fixes" the inconsistency later. 47:**Mechanism 04 needs:** goose applies one directory per invocation, so a migration run is **two invocations — the backend directory FIRST, then `shared/`** — and each needs its own version table (`goose -table goose_db_version_<driver>`, then `-table goose_db_version_shared`). One shared table across two directories would interleave version numbers from independent sequences and corrupt the history. Both invocations must succeed for the run to count as successful. 65:**The conclusion survives on a different and better reason: a transaction-scoped lock cannot cover a migration run.** `pg_advisory_xact_lock` is released when its transaction ends, and goose applies each migration file in its own transaction. The lock would therefore be released *between files*, letting a second runner interleave mid-run — which is precisely the failure it was supposed to prevent. Session-scoped locks, which would span the whole run, are the ones CockroachDB does not support. So the database can offer either the right scope or the right engine coverage, never both. 69:**A cheap portable backstop worth adding regardless — and an honest gap.** goose's version table is the one artifact all three backends share, so a unique constraint on its `version_id` would make a second concurrent runner fail on insert: portable, free, no platform feature required. **Whether goose's default version table already carries that constraint is unverified here** — I am not asserting it either way, because the objection that raised this correctly pointed out that the document claimed the database could not help without examining the one database-level mechanism goose already creates. The actionable form does not depend on the answer: **add a unique index on `version_id` ourselves in the first migration**, which is portable across all three backends and costs nothing if goose already does it. This is a backstop, not a replacement for R2 — it turns a silent interleave into a loud failure, which is the property actually worth buying. 85:Idempotent via `INSERT ... ON CONFLICT (name) DO NOTHING`, which the unique constraint on `auth_method.name` already supports and which all three backends accept (the same portable upsert form the DAO uses — see `./multi-db-strategy.md`). goose will not re-run an applied migration anyway; the `ON CONFLICT` makes the file safe against a database someone seeded by hand, which in practice is how this breaks. 91:Named so 04 does not read a boundary into this doc that isn't there: where the databases actually run; how the pipeline invokes goose; environment topology and how many of them there are; backup schedule and retention of backups; connection pooling; monitoring of migration runs. All 04's. This document says *what must be true* about migration execution and *why*, and stops there.

2 -- Contract amendment A6: the original ck_user_profile_phone_e164 accepted
3 -- 2-15 total digits after '+' ('^\+[1-9][0-9]{1,14}$'), while SQLite's own
4 -- phone CHECK accepts 7-15 (length BETWEEN 8 AND 16, including the '+').
5 -- "+1234" (5 digits) passed here and failed there — a profile writable on
6 -- one backend and rejected on the other, from the same input. Narrowed to
7 -- 7-15 digits ('^\+[1-9][0-9]{6,14}$'), matching SQLite exactly.
8 --
9 -- Editing 00001's CHECK text in place would have been a no-op against any
10 -- database that already applied it — goose tracks applied version
11 -- numbers, not file content, and does not re-run a migration once
12 -- recorded (migration-approach.md: "goose will not re-run an applied
13 -- migration anyway"). This is a real ALTER, applied through the normal
14 -- goose pipeline like any other schema change (Nolan Reyes, PR #24
15 -- review — caught before this shipped as a migration file nobody's
16 -- database would ever actually run).
17 --
18 -- ADD CONSTRAINT ... NOT VALID + a separate VALIDATE CONSTRAINT, not a
19 -- single ADD CONSTRAINT: on Postgres, a plain ADD CONSTRAINT CHECK takes
20 -- an ACCESS EXCLUSIVE lock for the full duration of the table scan that
21 -- validates every existing row: NOT VALID skips that scan up front (a
22 -- brief metadata-only lock instead), and VALIDATE CONSTRAINT then checks
23 -- existing rows with a lock level that doesn't block ordinary reads/
24 -- writes. This table has no production data behind this take-home, but
25 -- the pattern is the one to use regardless (Nolan Reyes, PR #24 review).
26 -- CockroachDB's schema changes are online by default and don't need the
27 -- same two-step split; see the cockroachdb migration's own comment.

NOT VALID + a separate VALIDATE\n CONSTRAINT, not a plain ADD CONSTRAINT — the NOT VALID form skips the\n full-table-scan lock a plain ADD CONSTRAINT CHECK would hold for its\n entire duration; VALIDATE CONSTRAINT then checks existing rows at a\n lighter lock level. Also caught by Nolan's review, naming the general\n pattern even though this table holds no production data yet.\n- CockroachDB: a plain DROP/ADD pair (no NOT VALID support, and its\n schema changes are online by default so the Postgres lock concern\n doesn't apply) — but this needed its own fix mid-verification: running\n DROP CONSTRAINT then ADD CONSTRAINT with the SAME name in one\n transaction fails on CockroachDB with \"duplicate constraint name\",\n something a fresh-schema conformance run against 00001+00002 together\n never exercises but a real incremental deployment would hit immediately.\n Both migration files now carry \"-- +goose NO TRANSACTION\" so each\n statement commits independently, and the test harness (which doesn't\n invoke goose itself, just applies the Up section's text) mirrors that\n by executing each statement separately rather than as one multi-\n statement Exec.\n\nAlso fixed while wiring this in: splitSQLStatements' naive split-on-\";\"\ninitially cut through a semicolon inside this migration's own prose\ncomments (\"...same two-step split; see the cockroachdb migration's own\ncomment.\") and misidentified it as a statement boundary. Comment lines\nare now stripped before splitting.\n\nVerified end-to-end against real Postgres 16 and real CockroachDB\nv23.2.0: fresh schema, 00001 then 00002 applied in sequence exactly as\nthe real pipeline would, all conformance assertions (including the two\nnew A6 ones) and the full existing suite green — this is the first time\nthis fix has actually been proven to survive an incremental migration\nrun rather than only a from-scratch schema stand-up.\n\nStory: contract amendment A6 (05-data-ops/multi-db-strategy.md)\nWork-By: Renata Cole (lead); caught by Nolan Reyes (QA) reviewing PR #24\n\nCo-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>\nClaude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_011Cuba4JUvrsQCrTdUj4yzk\nEOF\n)\""

Verified the regex boundary math digit-by-digit: `^\\+[1-9][0-9]{6,14}$` requires 1 mandatory digit plus 6-14 more, so 7-15 total digits — matching SQLite's `length BETWEEN 8 AND 16` (which counts the `+`) exactly. Hand-traced all four new test cases (6/7/15/16 digits) against both patterns; no off-by-one either side.\n\nTwo non-blocking notes for the record:\n1. `GetByUsername`'s case-insensitivity guarantee now depends entirely on each backend's SQL `LOWER()` matching its own index expression, rather than being partly checked in Go. Correct per 05's ruling, just noting the guarantee's locus moved from \"Go, checked by tests\" to \"index-expression parity per backend, checked by conformance.\"\n2. The two migration files' digit-range comments assert they're \"kept in sync\" with no automated coupling (no shared constant, no lint) — a future one-sided edit wouldn't be caught until the conformance suite ran. "command": "gh pr comment 24 --repo wtvamp/loginid-takehome --body \"$(cat <<'EOF'\n**Nolan Reyes — code review (A6 fix, final diff)**\n\nReviewed for production-failure-mode issues against 463f344.\n\n**Finding, fixed:** the original commit edited `00001_initial_schema.sql`'s CHECK constraint text directly. goose tracks applied version numbers, not file content, and does not re-run a migration once recorded (`migration-approach.md`: \"goose will not re-run an applied migration anyway\") — this project's real deployment already applied `00001` to real Postgres and CockroachDB instances (`LOG.md`), so editing that file's text would never have taken effect there; it would have changed git and nothing about what the live database actually enforces. Fixed in e61d165: `00001` reverted to its original, already-applied text; the actual narrowing now lands as a real `00002_phone_e164_narrow_range.sql` migration in both `migrations/postgres/` and `migrations/cockroachdb/`, applied through the normal pipeline.\n\nTwo related things worth naming, both addressed in the fix commit:\n- Postgres's `00002` uses `ADD CONSTRAINT ... NOT VALID` + a separate `VALIDATE CONSTRAINT`, not a plain `ADD CONSTRAINT`, to avoid holding a full-table-scan lock for the ALTER's whole duration — the general pattern to use regardless of whether this specific table holds production data yet.\n- Verifying this end-to-end (not just against a fresh from-scratch schema) surfaced a second, independent issue: CockroachDB rejects `DROP CONSTRAINT` followed by `ADD CONSTRAINT` with the *same name* in one transaction (\"duplicate constraint name\") — something a conformance run that only ever stands up 00001+00002 together on a fresh schema wouldn't catch, but a real incremental deploy applying 00002 on top of an already-migrated database would hit immediately. Both migration files now carry `-- +goose NO TRANSACTION` so each statement commits independently.\n\n`GetByUsername`'s case-fold change: confirmed no wildcard/injection surface (`LOWER(username) = LOWER($1)` is an equality predicate, not `LIKE` — `%`/`_` are literal characters either way) and no behavior change for any input, since the SQL-side `LOWER()` was always applied on top of the removed Go-side call.\n\nOne thing flagged for the record, not fixed here (agreed out of this PR's scope): the fix closes the *within-backend* fold disagreement but leaves a *cross-backend* one standing — Postgres's `lower()` is locale-aware, SQLite's is ASCII-only, so a non-ASCII-cased username could still fold to different strings per backend. Same class of defect A6 just closed, one edge over.\n\nVerdict: approve, contingent on (and now satisfied by) the migration-restructure fix in e61d165 — verified end-to-end against real Postgres 16 and CockroachDB v23.2.0, incremental 00001-then-00002 application, all green.\n\nWork-By: Nolan Reyes (QA)\nEOF\n)\""

Fixed by reverting 00001 and adding a real 00002_phone_e164_narrow_range.sql migration to both postgres/ and cockroachdb/ directories, applied through the normal pipeline (Postgres uses ADD CONSTRAINT NOT VALID + VALIDATE CONSTRAINT to avoid a full-table lock; both need `-- +goose NO TRANSACTION` since CockroachDB rejects a same-transaction DROP+ADD of a same-named constraint — caught while verifying the incremental apply path, not just a fresh-schema stand-up).\n\nVerified end-to-end against real Postgres 16 and CockroachDB v23.2.0 with the actual incremental 00001-then-00002 sequence a real deploy would run, both new conformance assertions and the full suite green. Both reviews posted, pushed at e61d165. Ready for the merge gate whenever convenient.",

Fixed by reverting 00001 and adding a real 00002_phone_e164_narrow_range.sql to both postgres/ and cockroachdb/ directories instead, applied through the normal pipeline.
