Reworded to \"config check passed/failed, no consumer wired yet\" and corrected the comment.\n5. **Flagging to Marcus (02) per Oren's own suggestion**, since it's adjacent to what PR #53's RequiredAuthEnvVars/env-classification-test machinery exists to prevent: the connector credential + two new URLs are validated only at `onboarding.NewTokenSource`/`NewHTTPConnectorClient` construction time, and (per finding 4) nothing calls those from a live request path yet — so today, misconfiguration produces only a startup log line, never an enforced failure. "message": "Oren's review of PR #54 (LT-33, api-service's outbound call to idp-connector) surfaced something adjacent to PR #53's RequiredAuthEnvVars work, and suggested I flag it to you: CONNECTOR_CLIENT_ID/SECRET, ISSUER_TOKEN_URL, and IDP_CONNECTOR_BASE_URL are validated only when internal/onboarding.NewTokenSource/NewHTTPConnectorClient are constructed — and right now nothing calls those from a live request path (no onboarding-flow handler exists yet, per this story's own non-goals; the constructor is invoked once at startup purely as a config smoke test, whose result is logged, not enforced). So today, misconfiguring any of these four produces a startup log line saying \"config check failed,\" never an actual failing request.\n\nI didn't fold them into RequiredAuthEnvVars because CONNECTOR_CLIENT_ID/SECRET resolve via *_FILE precedence (a Vault-vs-Secret indifference thing per LT-46), and RequiredAuthEnvVars's model is a bare \"is this literal env var name non-empty\" check that doesn't fit that resolution pattern.\n\nQuestion: is that an acceptable state for a capability with no consumer yet, or do you want these four gated some other way before LT-33 is called done? }61 ## Update — implementation (Renata Cole, 03) 62 63 New `internal/onboarding` package: `TokenSource` caches api-service's own connector-scoped client-credentials token per-replica, refreshing before TTL (a `refreshMargin` before stated expiry) or on an explicit `Invalidate` — called automatically by `Service.VerifyIdentity` whenever the connector returns an ambiguous 401 (idp-connector's own uniform-response design gives no way to tell whether it rejected our token or the vendor's; `VerifyIdentity` invalidates and retries the whole flow exactly once with a fresh own-token before concluding the vendor credential itself was rejected — a genuinely-bad vendor credential costs exactly 2 connector calls, never more). `HTTPConnectorClient`/`HTTPTokenClient` implement the real outbound HTTP calls (idp-connector's `/auth`+`/identity`, and the issuer's `/auth/token`), mirroring `internal/connector.HTTPVendorClient`'s own discipline: bounded connection pool, fresh headers built per call, no client-level token state. `Service.VerifyIdentity` bounds each connector call with its own `context.WithTimeout` plus a small fixed retry-with-backoff (`connectorMaxRetries`/`connectorRetryBackoff`) on genuine unreachability, collapsing to `ErrIdentityVerificationUnavailable` — never internal detail — while a genuine vendor-credential rejection surfaces as the distinguishable `ErrVendorCredentialRejected`. Own-token-acquisition failure is logged as its own class (`TokenSource.Token`'s own log line), separate from connector-unreachable (`Service.callAuth`/`callIdentity`'s own log lines). 64 65 No new public HTTP endpoint: per this story's own non-goals and PO review script item 7, `internal/onboarding.Service` is wired into `cmd/api-service/main.go`'s verifier-mode branch (`newOnboardingService`) for startup-time visibility, best-effort like the existing DAO-repository/pingDB pattern — missing config logs a warning and the binary still starts, rather than crash-looping over a capability nothing yet depends on. 66 67 **Vault-delivery indifference (PM relay, Theo's LT-46 in progress):** `CONNECTOR_CLIENT_ID`/`CONNECTOR_CLIENT_SECRET` are now resolved via `CONNECTOR_CLIENT_ID_FILE`/`CONNECTOR_CLIENT_SECRET_FILE` taking precedence over the plain env vars — the same `resolveDSNFrom` pattern `DB_DSN_FILE` already uses — so this code is indifferent to Kubernetes Secret vs. Vault Agent Injector delivery, per Warren's approval. Two new env vars this story adds: `ISSUER_TOKEN_URL`, `IDP_CONNECTOR_BASE_URL` (documented in root `PLANNING.md`'s Service boundaries section). **Flag to Theo:** api-service's verifier Deployment manifest needs these two new vars plus the connector client credential wired in (`deploy/api-service.yaml`) before this capability is actually reachable in-cluster — `newOnboardingService`'s own startup log will say "not available" until then, by design, not silently. 68 69 Test coverage: `internal/onboarding/onboarding_test.go` — token caching/refresh/invalidation, the happy path (token flows correctly from `Auth` into `Identity` and nowhere else), own-token-acquisition failure (never calls the connector at all), connector-unreachable (bounded retry count, generic error), vendor-credential-rejected (no wasted retry against a doomed credential), and the ambiguous-401-retries-exactly-once case — against fake `TokenClient`/`ConnectorClient` implementations per `decisions/test-double-strategy.md`. `cmd/api-service/main_test.go` covers `newOnboardingService`'s own fail-open-with-a-log behavior per missing config field. Full `go build`/`go vet`/`go test`/`staticcheck`/`gofmt`/`gitleaks` clean. 70

Full `go build`/`go vet`/`go test`/`staticcheck`/`gofmt`/`gitleaks` clean.\n\n## Oren Castellan's review (PR #54) — one real finding, fixed\n\nOren's second-pass review of `internal/onboarding` confirmed the retry/invalidate-on-401 bound is sound (never more than 2 full-flow attempts), the secret/token flow never reaches a log line or outlives its call, and `TokenSource`'s cache-read/fetch race is a documented, low-severity thundering-herd (idempotent last-write-wins, not a correctness bug — not worth a singleflight dedup at this scale). One real finding: `newOnboardingService`'s constructed `*Service` was discarded in `main.go` with no consumer wired anywhere, but the log line said \"ready\" and its doc comment wrongly compared it to `repo`/`pingDB` (which ARE consumed by handlers). Fixed — reworded to \"config check passed/failed, no consumer wired yet.\"\n\n## Marcus Ilori's (02) ruling — unenforced connector config is acceptable for now, conditionally\n\nOren also flagged (and I asked Marcus directly): `CONNECTOR_CLIENT_ID`/`SECRET`, `ISSUER_TOKEN_URL`, `IDP_CONNECTOR_BASE_URL` are validated only at construction time, and nothing calls those constructors from a live request path yet — so misconfiguration today produces a startup log line, never an enforced failure.\n\n**Ruling: acceptable, not a general exception to PR #53's \"required config is a control\" principle** — that principle exists to stop a control from silently not enforcing while something depends on it working, and nothing depends on this working yet (no live onboarding-flow handler exists). **Hard condition, stated here as a blocking acceptance criterion carried forward to whatever future story wires a live handler to this package: the moment that happens, these four env vars move from \"logged, not enforced\" to genuinely required** — fail loudly / refuse to start, or fail that request path closed, the same as everything `RequiredAuthEnvVars` already covers. Whoever picks up that story must not rediscover this; it is a Done-blocking requirement of that story, not an implementation detail.\n\nSeparately, Marcus noted the underlying gap this surfaced — `RequiredAuthEnvVars`'s \"bare non-empty literal\" model doesn't understand the `*_FILE`-takes-precedence shape `DB_DSN`/`DB_DSN_FILE` already has, independent of this story — is worth generalizing as its own small follow-up (not blocking this PR): teach `RequiredAuthEnvVars`/its callers \"either X or X_FILE must resolve\" once, rather than special-casing it per variable as more show up."

}1 # LT-43 refinement — S10: README (implemented vs. stubbed, AI workflow, test strategy)
2
3 **Product Owner:** Naomi Voss (01). **Research team:** Imogen Hale, Desmond Okafor, Tobias Lindqvist. **Engineering:** Renata Cole (03). **Source:** `03-engineering-delivery/backlog.md` S10 (LT-43).
4
5 **Who did the work:** Refined by Naomi Voss (PO); claims check Desmond Okafor; objection Tobias Lindqvist; engineering counterpart Renata Cole.
6
7 ## Why this one, why it matters more than most
8
9 Per team-lead: this is the document LoginID reads first — the submission's front door — and it should be written by someone who watched the process, not generated at the end from a summary of a summary. Depends on S1–S9, all of which are now Done or in their final pass, so this is genuinely ready to write for real, not from a plan.
10
11 ## What "implemented vs. stubbed" actually is, checked directly rather than assumed
12
13 **Real, live, deployed:**
14 - Full DAO layer against real Postgres (LT-35/36/38 — all Done, verified live against the deployed database and in CI against real Postgres/CockroachDB service containers).
15 - REST search/retrieve handlers (LT-39 — Done), auth middleware (LT-40), real token issuance (LT-51 — refined, in progress), all verified live at `https://loginid-takehome.uplifttech.org` with real minted tokens.
16 - The connector's own inbound `/auth`/`/identity` contract (LT-41 — Done, verified in-cluster via port-forward with a real vendor stub backing it).
17 - CI/CD (LT-47), containerization (LT-45), secrets delivery (LT-46), database provisioning (LT-52) — all Done, deployed, live.
18
19 **Deliberately stubbed, and why — this is the section a cold reader needs, stated plainly, not left to infer:**
20 - **The third-party vendor (ABC/XYZ) is an in-process `StubVendorClient`**, not a real HTTP integration — `idp-connector` falls back to it when `IDP_ABC_BASE_URL` is unset, logs this explicitly on startup, and this is `backlog.md`'s own stated non-goal for LT-41 ("no real vendor integration"). The assignment names the vendor generically; a real integration was never in scope.
21 - **The `authorize()` object-level policy hook is a `StopgapAuthorizer`**, not the real caller-referral datastore `handoff-03-auth.md`'s F8 resolution describes — a stated seam, not a hidden gap, per LT-39/LT-40's own non-goals.
22 - **CockroachDB and SQLite are exercised in CI only, never deployed live** — only Postgres runs in the actual cluster (LT-52's explicit scope limit). A reader should not expect to find CockroachDB running anywhere.
23 - **No `POST /profiles` write endpoint exists or is planned** — Q2 is search/retrieve by the assignment's own text; a write path was ruled out as scope creep (team-lead + Priya's decision, recorded on LT-39). Review/demo data enters via a version-controlled, idempotent SQL file (`deploy/demo-data/001-review-profiles.sql`) applied as a documented runbook step, not through the API.
24 - **Rate limiting, the touch counter, and the token-issuer's grant limiter are in-process, single-replica-only** — their own code comments state a shared store (Redis) is needed for a genuine multi-instance deployment; this project runs `api-service`/`api-service-issuer` at 1 replica with `Recreate` rollout strategy specifically so this simplification holds correctly, not silently degrading under a rolling update (a real live-tested bug this project found and fixed, not a hypothetical).
25 - **`api-service` calling the connector (LT-33)** is in progress as of this writing — the piece that makes Q2 and Q3 one system, not yet merged.
26 - **The retention sweep (LT-44) — designed and enforced at the schema/DAO level, not yet operationally running.** `DeleteExpired`/`DeleteProfile` exist on the DAO composite and are tested there, but nothing schedules or calls them; no cron/job wires the sweep to run against the live database. `pii-governance.md`'s retention policy is a real, tracked, backlogged story (S11/LT-44), not a silently-abandoned requirement — but a cold reader checking whether retention/deletion actually runs in production would otherwise have to discover its absence themselves.
27
28 ## Acceptance criteria (restated from `backlog.md` S10)
29
30 - [ ] A cold reader can tell what runs vs. what's a stub without asking — same bar as every hand-off in this project. The "deliberately stubbed" list above is the actual content this criterion requires; the README section should be at least this specific, not a vaguer restatement.
31 - [ ] Test-strategy section states: unit-heavy, integration deliberately stubbed (the assignment doesn't require full end-to-end); the same-PR fake-update rule from `decisions/test-double-strategy.md`, **now also a literal checklist line in `.github/pull_request_template.md`** (LT-42's fix — cite both, since the design doc alone was found insufficient during this project's own review).
32 - [ ] AI tooling note names the actual model/effort tier per story, not just "Claude Code was used": `sonnet, high` for every implementation story in this track's backlog except the connector (`opus, high` — the one seat above sonnet, per `planning-approach.md`'s connector-token-lifecycle exception, because a subtle bug there directly contradicts this project's own threat model). Names the actual orchestration patterns run and what they produced: `decisions/go-layout-debate.md` (package/binary-split decision), `decisions/error-semantics.md` (rotating devil's-advocate, Oren's objections), `decisions/context-propagation.md` (deadline-budget ruling), `decisions/test-double-strategy.md` (hand-written-fakes ruling, Marisol's mitigation). This project is also an org-orchestration exercise across five tracks with hired sub-teams (`PLAN.md`, `CASTING.md`) — worth one sentence acknowledging that's the broader structure this track's own patterns sit inside, without re-explaining the whole org here (that's `../CLAUDE.md`'s job).
33 - [ ] **Added — real, live-tested findings worth naming precisely, not just the design-time patterns.** This track's own PO review (a Product-track lead running live acceptance checks against the deployed system, not just code review) found and helped fix four real production-shaped bugs — named individually and precisely (per Tobias's objection, which correctly caught an early draft conflating two of these into one mislabeled bullet), not lumped together:
34 1. A CI coverage gap where `pr-check` silently skipped every Postgres and CockroachDB conformance test (only SQLite genuinely ran), reading as a green build with two of three backends unproven.
35 2. A cross-replica rate-limiting bug in `api-service`'s own resource-API rate limiter, reproduced by actually crossing the 10 req/min cap live against 2 running replicas.
36 3. `api-service`'s own Q2 token issuer/verifier wiring shipped with `AUTH_JWT_ISSUER`/`AUTH_JWT_AUDIENCE` unset in its manifest — minted tokens carried no `iss` and were checked against an empty `aud`, silently "verifying" for the wrong reason.
37 4. A **separate, later** total outage in `idp-connector`'s (Q3's) own inbound auth — its Deployment manifest never set `AUTH_JWKS_URL` at all, so every request, including a genuinely valid token, failed identically with a JWKS-fetch error. Distinct from #3: a different service (the connector, not `api-service`), a different missing variable, found in a separate in-cluster review pass.
38 Naming these precisely, not vaguely, is itself evidence of the process the AI-workflow note should describe: verification against the live, deployed system, not only against a test suite or a design doc — and getting the subsystem right matters, since this project's own vocabulary (`idp-connector` = Q3, `api-service`/`api-service-issuer` = Q2) carries real information a cold reader relies on.
39
40 ## Non-goals
41
42 - No re-explanation of the org-wide orchestration structure (leads, hires, `CASTING.md`) — that's the root `CLAUDE.md`'s and `LOG.md`'s job; this README covers track 03's own AI-workflow story specifically.
43 - No new code, no new tests — this is a documentation story.
44 - No speculative "future work" section beyond what's already named as a stated seam elsewhere (`StopgapAuthorizer`, the vendor stub, Redis for multi-instance) — don't invent a roadmap this project hasn't committed to.
45
46 ## PO review script
47
48 1. Read the README's "implemented vs. stubbed" section cold, as an evaluator would: can every item in the "deliberately stubbed" list above be found stated plainly, with a reason, not just a bare "TODO"?
49 2. Confirm the test-strategy section cites both `decisions/test-double-strategy.md` and the PR-template checklist line — not just the design doc alone (the exact gap LT-42 found).
50 3. Confirm the AI-workflow note names actual model/effort tiers per story (spot-check against `backlog.md`'s own `Model/effort:` lines) and actual orchestration-pattern outcomes (spot-check against the cited `decisions/*.md` files), not generic claims.
51 4. Confirm all four live-review findings (CI skip; rate-limit/replica bug; `api-service`'s issuer/verifier config gap; `idp-connector`'s separate JWKS outage) are named individually and correctly attributed to the right subsystem, not omitted or conflated — a submission that only shows the clean end-state, with none of the process that found real bugs, undersells the actual work done.
52
53 ## Research team review
54
55 **Desmond Okafor — claims check:** Verified model/effort claims exactly against `backlog.md` (11 `sonnet, high`, exactly one `opus, high` — the connector, matching `planning-approach.md`'s exception language). Verified the PR-template fix, the `Recreate`-strategy fix (confirmed actually merged, not still-open), and the `idp-connector` JWKS outage as a real, merged incident (PR #48). Everything else in the "deliberately stubbed" list confirmed against code inspected in earlier passes. **One real omission found:** the retention sweep (LT-44/S11) is missing from the list entirely — `DeleteExpired`/`DeleteProfile` exist only on the DAO interface and in test fakes, no `cmd/` caller, no `CronJob` manifest anywhere; a real, tracked, backlogged story with zero operational wiring, the same class of gap as the other stubbed items. Added with his exact wording.
56
57 **Tobias Lindqvist — objection:** The original draft's third "live finding" bullet mislabeled a real `api-service` (Q2) issuer/verifier config bug as a "connector-auth outage," which points a cold reader at the wrong subsystem (`idp-connector`/Q3, never involved in that specific incident). Checked against my own LT-41.md record and confirmed: there's a second, genuinely separate incident that *is* a real `idp-connector` outage (missing `AUTH_JWKS_URL` in its own manifest, verified directly via port-forward against the connector itself) — both are real, distinct, and now named individually and correctly attributed rather than conflated into one vaguely-worded bullet. Confirmed and approved once the split was applied.
58
59 **Naomi Voss — ruling:** All fixes applied — LT-44 added to the stubbed list, the two distinct auth incidents split and correctly attributed to their actual subsystems. This refinement is accepted and ready to hand off. The precision Tobias insisted on here matters for exactly the reason he named: this is the one document evaluators read first, and getting "which subsystem broke" right is itself evidence of the same rigor this whole review chain has been running.

Proposer: Renata Cole. ## Proposal Hand-written interface fakes (not generated mocks) for DAO/handler tests — the `Repository` composite and its three sub-interfaces are small and stable enough that a fake struct with configurable fields/funcs per test is less overhead than adopting a codegen tool (`gomock`/`mockery`) for this scope. ## Objections — Marisol Ferran (Enthusiast) 1. **Interface drift is silent with hand-written fakes.** A new interface method still compiles against a stale fake, which silently zero-values it instead of failing a test that should catch the gap. Generated mocks fail loudly or leave a visibly regenerated stub. Marisol's own mitigation: enforce fake regeneration in the same PR as any interface change, as a review checklist item — makes drift a procedural risk, not a tooling one. 2. **Call-count/ordering assertions are free with mocks, hand-rolled with fakes.** Conceded this is likely moot here — S2–S4's test cases are table-driven input/output, not call-sequencing assertions. 3. **Legibility to a reviewer** — conceded weak by Marisol herself: a 3-method, ~20-line fake is faster to read and trust than looking up `mockgen` syntax, for a project this size. Marisol's own assessment: objection 3 doesn't hold at this scale; objections 1 and 2 are real at scale but this project may not have that scale. ## Ruling (Renata Cole) **Hand-written fakes stand** — objection 3 was conceded by its own author, and objection 2 doesn't apply given the table-driven test shape already committed to in S5. Objection 1 is real but has a cheap procedural fix, which is adopted rather than reaching for a codegen dependency to solve it. ---pr template--- ## Summary ## Who did the work <!-- Lead, hires and seats, reviewers (including 02's independent reviewer where applicable), and models. --> ## Links <!-- Refinement doc path, Jira key. --> ## Checklist - [ ] Any change to `dao.Repository` or its sub-interfaces updates the hand-written fake in this PR (decisions/test-double-strategy.md) - [ ] Any new env var read in config.go is set in every Deployment whose APP_MODE uses it (handoff-03-auth.md v9) - [ ] No secret or token in code, tests, or comments (gitleaks runs on this PR's commits) - [ ] `git diff origin/main` reviewed before requesting merge

}53:The project is run as an org: this PM agent (Dana Whitfield) orchestrates five standing track-lead agents, and each lead hires a small sub-team of specialist agents with deliberately varied personalities. **Each track lead runs as its own top-level Claude Code session**, launched from its track directory in its own tmux window — so it loads its own track `CLAUDE.md` and persona natively, owns and spawns its hires as named teammates in that window, and talks to the PM session through cross-session messaging. Hires belong to their lead's session, not the PM's. The governing files, all at the root: 55:- `PLAN.md` — the approved org plan for the planning phase (phases, gates, verification). `~/.claude/plans/` is scratch; this is the record. 57:- `CASTING.md` — archetype palette, org-wide variance rules, hire sizing, the persona-writing standard, the orchestration-pattern catalog (adversarial pair, red/blue, three hats, rotating devil's advocate, structured written debate, newcomer's question), the deep-research rule, the hire-creation procedure, and the registry of every hire. 58:- `LOG.md` — dated, append-only journal of what happened and why (team-lead writes it; it is part of the submission). 64:- Hires do not spawn subagents. Only track leads (and team-lead) authorize or run deep research (patents, whitepapers, standards, primary sources); hires request it from their lead. ---go-layout--- /Users/warrenthompson/Source/LoginID/03-engineering-delivery/decisions/go-layout-debate.md:1:# Decision: Go layout — one binary vs. two /Users/warrenthompson/Source/LoginID/03-engineering-delivery/decisions/go-layout-debate.md:13:## Ruling (Renata Cole, pragmatist) /Users/warrenthompson/Source/LoginID/03-engineering-delivery/decisions/error-semantics.md:1:# Decision: Error semantics (wrap vs. sentinel) /Users/warrenthompson/Source/LoginID/03-engineering-delivery/decisions/error-semantics.md:16:## Ruling (Renata Cole) /Users/warrenthompson/Source/LoginID/03-engineering-delivery/decisions/context-propagation.md:1:# Decision: Context propagation into the DAO layer /Users/warrenthompson/Source/LoginID/03-engineering-delivery/decisions/context-propagation.md:17:## Ruling (Renata Cole)

}# Decision: Go layout — one binary vs. two
Pattern: three hats (Marisol Ferran, optimist · Nolan Reyes, pessimist · Renata Cole, pragmatist). Diagram: Ines Dabrowski (pending, will be appended when delivered).
## Optimist (Marisol Ferran)
Argued for one binary on take-home-appropriate grounds: every extra binary is authoring/wiring/README ceremony that doesn't teach the reader anything, for a submission graded on demonstrated reasoning. Conceded the isolation argument is real and already published as stable in `PLANNING.md` with 04 building against it, so declined to relitigate the boundary itself. Actual proposal: **keep two binaries, merge the ceremony, not the process boundary** — both `cmd/api-service/main.go` and `cmd/idp-connector/main.go` become thin wrappers around one shared `internal/app` package (route registration, config loading), so the deployables stay two but the authored code stays close to one. Would yield even that if a shared-bootstrap bug risked taking both down at once.
## Pessimist (Nolan Reyes)
Pattern-matched to a production incident: a shared process/connection pool let a slowly-timing-out downstream partner exhaust the pool and take down an unrelated inbound API — 40 minutes of a partner's problem becoming the platform's outage. Confirmed two binaries closes the *shared-fate* version of that failure (a stalled vendor can't starve `api-service`'s own pool). Flagged what it does **not** close: host/deploy colocation (same node, same FD/CPU budget, same on-call page) is a 04 question, not implied by the binary split; and a self-inflicted retry storm in the connector's token-refresh logic (no backoff) is a failure mode independent of process boundaries entirely. Explicitly not arguing against two binaries — arguing that the boundary alone doesn't buy safety without `context.WithTimeout` on every outbound call and a bounded worker pool.
## Ruling (Renata Cole, pragmatist)
**Two binaries stands** — this was already published in `PLANNING.md`'s Service boundaries section as stable, 04 is building against it, and neither hat argued for reopening it. Confirmed rather than relitigated.
**Adopting Marisol's shared-`internal/app` proposal.** Both `cmd/*/main.go` become thin wrappers over `internal/app`: route registration and config loading live once, not twice. This gets the authoring-cost win she argued for without touching the process boundary 04 depends on. Package layout in `PLANNING.md` gets a note added (not a structural change — `internal/app` slots alongside the existing `internal/` packages).
**Adopting Nolan's requirement, not just noting it.** Carrying into S4's spec (connector `/auth` + `/identity`): every outbound HTTP call to a vendor must set a `context.WithTimeout` (no unbounded outbound calls), and the connector's HTTP client uses a bounded connection pool. Token-refresh/retry logic must back off, never tight-loop against a failing vendor endpoint. This is now a stated acceptance criterion for S4, not an assumption riding on "it's a separate binary."
=== error-semantics ===
# Decision: Error semantics (wrap vs. sentinel)
Pattern: rotating devil's advocate, decision 1 of 3 (seat: Oren Castellan). Proposer: Renata Cole.
## Proposal
Go 1.13+ error wrapping (`fmt.Errorf("...: %w", err)`) for propagating unexpected/lower-level errors up the call stack, plus a small set of exported sentinel errors (`dao.ErrNotFound`, `dao.ErrDuplicate`) for conditions callers are expected to branch on via `errors.Is`.
## Objections — Oren Castellan (Detail Hawk)
1. **Sentinel set must be closed and enumerated now**, not left open-ended — otherwise hires add ad hoc `ErrX` values across S2–S4 with no stable contract. Wants a fixed list plus a named owner and a propose-before-adding rule.
2. **Wrapped errors must never cross the HTTP boundary raw** — `err.Error()` on a wrapped DB error can leak driver text (DSN fragments, column/constraint names) to an API client. Wants an explicit translation function at the boundary; anything unmapped defaults to a generic 500 with no wrapped detail.
3. **`errors. Is` against a sentinel breaks silently if a backend returns a driver-native error instead** (e.g. `*pgconn.PgError` instead of `dao.ErrDuplicate`). Wants the `Repository` interface contract to state translation is *mandatory* per backend, verified by an S5 test case per backend.
4. **No stated rule for `context.DeadlineExceeded`/`context.Canceled`.** These aren't ordinary internal errors and shouldn't page as generic 500s. Wants them checked and mapped to a distinct response code before generic wrapping applies.
## Ruling (Renata Cole)
All four accepted; no decline.
1. Sentinel set is closed and fixed now: `dao.ErrNotFound`, `dao.ErrDuplicate`, `dao.ErrInvalidInput`. Defined once in `internal/dao`. Rule: no hire adds a sentinel unilaterally — propose it to me with the one-line reason, I add it. This applies for the rest of the design/implementation phase.
2. `internal/api` never serializes `err.Error()` on an unmapped error. A translation function (`internal/api` boundary layer) maps the three sentinels to their HTTP status/safe message; anything else defaults to a generic 500 with no wrapped detail surfaced to the client. Wrapped errors are for logs only.
3. The `Repository` interface contract states translation of known driver-native errors to the shared sentinels is **mandatory**, not optional, per backend implementation. S5's test strategy gets an explicit line item: one test per backend proving the translation happens (e.g., a unique-constraint violation surfaces as `dao.ErrDuplicate`, not a raw driver type).
=== context-propagation ===
# Decision: Context propagation into the DAO layer
Pattern: rotating devil's advocate, decision 2 of 3 (seat: Nolan Reyes). Proposer: Renata Cole.
## Proposal
Every `Repository` method (and its three sub-interfaces — `Profiles`/`Credentials`/`Methods`) takes `context.Context` as its first argument, propagated unbroken from the HTTP request through the handler into every DB call, so request cancellation/timeout actually cancels in-flight queries.
## Objections — Nolan Reyes (Veteran)
Agreed with the direction but pushed on three failure modes from production experience:
1. **Cancellation racing a multi-statement write.** A cancelled `SELECT` aborts cleanly; a cancelled multi-statement write (e.g., profile + credential saved together) risks a half-written row unless cancellation is scoped to a transaction, not a statement. Cited a migration job killed mid-batch by a deploy SIGTERM, leaving orphaned rows because cancellation was handled per-statement.
2. **Deadline budget, not a boolean.** Unbroken propagation means an inherited, already-partially-consumed deadline reaches the DAO call. If upstream work (e.g., a connector call) already burned most of the HTTP handler's timeout, the DAO gets a shrinking remainder and starts timing out under *normal* latency, not just failure — the good case starts looking like the bad case.
3. **Sub-interfaces are not uniformly cancel-safe.** Credential writes during auth are exactly the path that caused a real incident: a retry re-issued a credential write against an already-expired derived context and silently no-op'd instead of erroring. Wants explicit naming of which write paths deliberately detach from the inbound context (via `context.WithoutCancel` or a fresh background context) for durability, distinct from read paths that don't need it.
## Ruling (Renata Cole)
All three accepted; no decline.
1. Any `Repository` method that writes to more than one table (e.g., a profile+credential save) runs inside a single `Tx`. Context cancellation during that transaction triggers `Tx.Rollback`, never a partial commit — this is a stated requirement on the `Repository` implementation contract, not left to each backend's discretion.
2. Deadline propagation is a budget-allocation decision, stated explicitly in the auth middleware's design (S7, LT-40 — this ruling predates the current S-numbering and originally cited "S3," which now names the Postgres/CockroachDB DAO story, LT-36, not the middleware): the HTTP-boundary timeout must be sized to cover realistic p99 DAO latency *plus* any upstream work (e.g., no DAO call should ever be handed a near-zero remaining deadline as a matter of routine operation). This gets a concrete number attached when S7's middleware design is written, not left as "some deadline."{

"content": "# Track 03: Engineering & Delivery\n\nGo implementation of all three assignment questions — the DAO layer (Q1), the REST search/retrieve API with authentication (Q2), and the third-party identity connector (Q3) — plus the glue between Q2 and Q3. See root `../CLAUDE.md` for the full assignment text and how this track fits the other four; this file covers only what this track built, what's stubbed, and how.\n\n## What's implemented — live, deployed, verified against the running system\n\n- **Q1 — DAO layer** (`internal/dao`, `internal/dao/postgres`, `internal/dao/sqlite`): `user_profile`/`user_credential` storage behind one `Repository` interface, real implementations for Postgres/CockroachDB and SQLite. Verified against the actually-deployed Postgres database, and in CI against real Postgres and CockroachDB service containers (not mocked) — a cross-backend conformance suite (LT-38) asserts all three backends behave identically, not just that their Go signatures match.\n- **Q2 — REST API** (`internal/api`, `internal/app`): `POST /profiles/search`, `GET /profiles/{id}`, and a real RFC 6749 client-credentials `POST /auth/token` grant, all behind RS256 JWT verification. Verified live at `https://loginid-takehome.uplifttech.org` with real minted tokens, including rate-limiting, masked-vs-full-read scoping, and pagination.\n- **Q3 — connector** (`internal/connector`, `cmd/idp-connector`): the third-party IDP connector's own inbound `/auth`/`/identity` contract. Verified in-cluster via `kubectl port-forward` with a real vendor stub backing it — happy path, audience rejection, fail-closed identical-content error responses, a timing floor on the three internal failure branches, and a failure-ratio rate limiter actually firing under a live failed-auth burst, not just asserted in a unit test.\n- **api-service → idp-connector integration** (`internal/onboarding`, LT-33): api-service's own outbound call to the connector, closing the loop between Q2 and Q3 — its own cached, refreshed OAuth2 client-credentials token; bounded timeouts and retry-with-backoff on connector calls; a generic upward failure on any connector-unreachable condition, with own-token-acquisition failures logged as a distinct class.\n- CI/CD, containerization, secrets delivery, and database provisioning (04's stories, LT-45/46/47/52) are all Done and live — `pr-check` runs this track's tests against real Postgres and CockroachDB service containers on every PR, not just SQLite.\n\n## Deliberately stubbed — stated plainly, not left to infer\n\n- **The third-party vendor (ABC/XYZ) is an in-process `StubVendorClient`**, not a real HTTP integration. `idp-connector` falls back to it whenever `IDP_ABC_BASE_URL` is unset, and says so explicitly on startup. The assignment names the vendor generically — a real integration was never in scope (`refinement/LT-41.md`'s own stated non-goal).\n- **The `authorize()` object-level policy hook is a `StopgapAuthorizer`**, a hard-coded, default-deny stand-in — not the real caller-referral datastore `handoff-03-auth.md`'s own design describes. A stated seam, not a hidden gap.\n- **CockroachDB and SQLite are exercised in CI only, never deployed live.** Only Postgres runs in the actual cluster (LT-52's explicit scope limit) — don't go looking for a running CockroachDB instance anywhere.\n- **No `POST /profiles` write endpoint exists or is planned.** Q2 is search/retrieve by the assignment's own text; a write path was ruled out as scope creep. Review/demo data enters via a version-controlled, idempotent SQL file (`deploy/demo-data/001-review-profiles.sql`), applied as a documented runbook step, never through the API.\n- **Rate limiting, the touch counter, and the token issuer's grant limiter are in-process and single-replica-only.** Their own code comments say a shared store (Redis) would be needed for a genuine multi-instance deployment — this project runs `api-service`/`api-service-issuer` at 1 replica with a `Recreate` rollout strategy *specifically* so this simplification holds correctly rather than silently degrading under a rolling update. That constraint exists because of a real bug this project found live (see below), not as a hypothetical caveat.\n- **The retention sweep (LT-44) is designed and enforced at the schema/DAO level, but not yet operationally running.** `DeleteExpired`/`DeleteProfile` exist on the DAO composite and are tested there directly; nothing yet schedules or calls them against the live database. `../02-ai-security-architecture/pii-governance.md`'s retention policy is a real, tracked, backlogged story, not an abandoned requirement.\n\n## Package layout\n\n`cmd/api-service` and `cmd/idp-connector` are both thin wrappers — argument parsing and `main()` only. Route registration and config loading live once, in `internal/app` and `internal/config`, shared by both binaries rather than duplicated per binary (see `decisions/go-layout-debate.md` below). `internal/api` holds Q2's HTTP handlers, JWT middleware, rate limiting, and the token issuer; `internal/connector` holds Q3's inbound handlers and outbound vendor client; `internal/onboarding` holds LT-33's mediating client from `api-service` to the connector; `internal/dao` and its `postgres`/`sqlite` subpackages hold Q1, behind one `Repository` interface `internal/dao/conformance` tests identically across backends.\n\n## Test strategy\n\nUnit-heavy; integration deliberately stubbed where the assignment itself doesn't require full end-to-end coverage. Hand-written interface fakes, not generated mocks, for DAO/handler tests (`decisions/test-double-strategy.md`) — small enough interfaces that a fake struct per test case beats adopting a codegen dependency at this project's scale. The rule that any change to `dao.Repository` (or its sub-interfaces) updates its hand-written fake in the same PR is now a literal checklist line in `.github/pull_request_template.md`, not just prose in a design doc — LT-42's own review found the design doc alone insufficient (a PR landed an interface change without updating its fake, caught only in a later pass), so the checklist line is the actual enforcement site now, and the design doc explains why. Real-backend correctness (Postgres/CockroachDB/SQLite conformance, the CockroachDB serialization-retry path) is proven against real databases, in CI, not mocked — `internal/dao/conformance`'s own suite is the one enforcement site for \"do the backends behave alike,\" distinct from a signature-matching test that proves nothing about behavior.\n\n## AI tooling and workflow\n\nEvery implementation story in this track's backlog runs at `sonnet, high` except the connector (`idp-connector`'s `/auth`/`/identity`, Q3), which runs at `opus, high` — the one seat above sonnet in this track, per `../02-ai-security-architecture/planning-approach.md`'s connector-token-lifecycle exception: a subtle bug in that specific code path (a leaked or misscoped vendor token) directly contradicts this project's own threat model in a way most of this track's other code doesn't.\n\nBeyond model selection, implementation decisions in this track ran through structured adversarial review rather than being decided unilaterally:\n- `decisions/go-layout-debate.md` — a three-hats debate (optimist/pessimist/pragmatist) on one binary vs. two, ruling to keep two binaries (already published and built against by 04) but merge the *authoring* cost via a shared `internal/app` package, plus a concrete requirement (bounded timeouts, no tight-looping retries on outbound calls) adopted from the pessimist's production-incident pattern-matching.\n- `decisions/error-semantics.md` — a rotating devil's-advocate pass (Oren Castellan) that closed the sentinel-error set, forced a translation boundary so wrapped DB errors never leak driver text to an API client, and added explicit handling for `context.DeadlineExceeded`/`Canceled`.\n- `decisions/context-propagation.md` — a second rotating devil's-advocate pass (Nolan Reyes, drawing on production-incident pattern-matching) that scoped multi-statement writes to a transaction under context cancellation, and named which write paths deliberately detach from the inbound context for durability.\n- `decisions/test-double-strategy.md` — a third rotating devil's-advocate pass (Marisol Ferran) that weighed hand-written fakes against generated mocks; hand-written fakes stood, with the interface-drift risk closed procedurally (the PR-template checklist line above), not by adopting a codegen tool.\n\nThis project is also a broader org-orchestration exercise — a PM agent coordinating five track leads, each running a small hired sub-team with deliberately varied personalities, using patterns like adversarial pairs, red/blue, and structured written debate (`../PLAN.md`, `../CASTING.md`) — the four decisions above are this track's own instance of that same structure, not a separate practice invented for engineering work alone.\n\n## Real, live-tested findings\n\nThis track's own delivery process included live acceptance review against the actually-deployed system, not only code review and unit tests — and that process found and helped fix four real, distinct production-shaped bugs, each named individually rather than lumped together:\n\n1. **A CI coverage gap**, where `pr-check` silently *skipped* every Postgres and CockroachDB conformance test — only SQLite genuinely ran — while still reporting an overall green build. Fixed two ways: real Postgres/CockroachDB service containers added to the CI job, and every affected test fixture changed to fail loudly (not skip) when a required backend DSN is absent specifically in CI.\n2. **A cross-replica rate-limiting bug** in `api-service`'s own resource-API rate limiter, reproduced by actually crossing its 10 req/min cap live against 2 running replicas — each replica's in-process limiter had no visibility into the other's request count, so the effective cap was silently doubled. Fixed by moving `api-service`/`api-service-issuer` to a single replica with a `Recreate` rollout strategy (04's story), a deliberate scope limit stated plainly above, not a silent workaround.\n3. **`api-service`'s own Q2 token issuer/verifier wiring shipped with `AUTH_JWT_ISSUER`/`AUTH_JWT_AUDIENCE` unset** in its Kubernetes manifest — minted tokens carried no `iss` and were checked against an empty `aud`, \"verifying\" successfully for the wrong reason rather than failing loudly. Fixed in the manifest, plus a startup check (`cmd/api-service`) that now refuses to start with either unset, and a URL-shape check on the JWKS/issuer values specifically (a non-empty but garbage value is caught too, not just an absent one).\n4. **A separate, later total outage in `idp-connector`'s (Q3's) own inbound auth** — its Deployment manifest never set `AUTH_JWKS_URL` at all, so every request, including a genuinely valid token, failed identically with a JWKS-fetch error. Distinct from finding 3: a different service, a different missing variable, found in a separate in-cluster review pass. Fixed the same way: the manifest, plus a startup check in `cmd/idp-connector` itself, plus a systemic test (`internal/config`'s manifest-vs-config test) that now parses every real Kubernetes Deployment manifest and asserts it sets everything its own mode requires — closing this specific class of gap structurally, in CI, rather than relying on a fourth live incident to catch the next occurrence.\n\nNaming these precisely — which subsystem, which variable, which fix — is itself part of what this AI-workflow note is meant to demonstrate: verification against the live, deployed system, not only against a test suite or a design doc.\n"

No flags, no config files. - **DAO driver-selection mechanism:** a factory `dao.New(driver, dsn string) (dao.Repository, error)` chosen at startup from `DB_DRIVER`. `dao.Repository` is a composite interface — `Profiles() ProfileRepository`, `Credentials() CredentialRepository`, `Methods() AuthMethodRepository`, plus `CreateProfileWithCredential(ctx, p, c)`, `DeleteExpired(ctx, class, olderThan, maxRows)`, `DeleteProfile(ctx, id, externalRef)`, and `Close() error` directly on the composite — matching 05's now-accepted contract in `multi-db-strategy.md` §1/§3b/§3c (the retention-sweep addendum, consistency-pass F21), kept deliberately distinct (not one flat interface) because it's a load-bearing PII/credential-separation control per `05-data-ops/pii-governance.md`: a handler has to reach for the credential accessor on purpose. Each backend package returns one struct satisfying the composite. Factory signature and `DB_DRIVER` selection are unchanged. - **Stable for 04 to build against:** the two-binary split, the `cmd/` entrypoint names, the env-var config approach and variable names above, and the `dao.New(driver, dsn)` factory signature. **05's contract has landed and is accepted** (consistency-pass F23 — this line previously said the composite's method set was "not yet stable" pending the contract; it has since landed, including `CreateProfileWithCredential` and `Close()` above). **Not yet stable:** internal DAO implementation details, ORM/query-builder choice, handler-package internals — those are implementation, not contract. - **Note for 04, from the Go-layout three-hats ruling (`03-engineering-delivery/decisions/go-layout-debate.md`):** "two binaries" is a *process* boundary, not a claim about host/deploy placement — whether `api-service` and `idp-connector` land on the same node is 04's call, not implied by this section. If they're colocated, `idp-connector`'s outbound-call failure isolation from `api-service` depends on 04's resource limits, not just the process split. Separately, S4 now requires `context.WithTimeout` on every outbound vendor call and a bounded connection pool/backoff on token-refresh retries — not a 04 concern, but flagged here so 04 doesn't assume connector-side backpressure is handled elsewhere. }1 # LT-44 refinement — S11: retention sweep, `DeleteExpired`/`DeleteProfile` wiring
2
3 **Product Owner:** Naomi Voss (01). **Research team:** Imogen Hale, Desmond Okafor, Tobias Lindqvist. **Engineering:** Renata Cole (03, sweep-invocation code), Theo Bergman (04, `CronJob` manifest + metrics sink); design inputs: Priya Nandakumar (05, retention windows/clocks/classes), Marcus Ilori (02, seat on subject-deletion audit trail if any).
4
5 **Who did the work:** Refined by Naomi Voss (PO); claims check Desmond Okafor; objection Tobias Lindqvist.
6
7 ## Why this one, now
8
9 Per team-lead: without this, the README (LT-43, correctly deferred to write last) would have to list PII retention as stubbed — at a company whose own product framing is PII minimization, that's a real, visible gap in the submission, not a cosmetic one. Desmond's LT-43 finding made the case concretely: `DeleteExpired`/`DeleteProfile` exist and are tested on the DAO composite, but nothing schedules or calls either method — a designed-but-not-operational control. This is roughly a half-day story (a `CronJob` calling a `--sweep` mode of the existing `api-service` image, bounded by the already-built `maxRows`, audited) that turns a stub line into a delivered one.
10
11 ## What this story actually is
12
13 Not new DAO methods — `DeleteExpired`/`DeleteProfile` already exist on the composite (05's `multi-db-strategy.md` §3c) and are already tested (LT-38's conformance suite: `TestConformance_DeleteExpired_*`, `TestConformance_OldestSurvivingAt_*`, `TestConformance_Drained_*`, `TestConformance_DeleteWritesExactlyOneDeletionLogRow`, `TestConformance_DeleteExpired_AlreadyCancelledContextDeletesNothing` — all confirmed present during LT-42's full completeness sweep). This story is the **caller**: a scheduled invocation that loops per `RetentionClass` until drained, plus a subject-deletion request path, plus the health metric that tells 04 whether it's actually running.
14
15 **Mechanism (team-lead's recommendation, adopted):** a `CronJob` in `04-infra-devops`'s manifests invoking `cmd/api-service`'s existing image in a new `--sweep` mode (or a distinct small entrypoint, `03`'s call) — not a new binary, not a new image build, reusing what's already deployed.
16
17 ## The three retention classes and windows this sweep must implement (from `pii-governance.md`, cited so this story doesn't re-derive them)
18
19 | `RetentionClass` | Clock | Window | Why this clock specifically |
20 |---|---|---|---|
21 | `direct` | `updated_at` | 24 months | Proposed POC default, engineering basis only — explicitly **not** a legal ruling (`pii-governance.md`'s own "unknown, needs product/legal ruling" status). This story implements the number as configured, doesn't treat it as settled policy. |
22 | `idp_cache` | `updated_at` | 30 days | A cache, not a record — re-hydration costs one `/identity` call, so the window trades staleness against re-fetch cost. |
23 | `idp_cache_orphan` | `created_at`, **deliberately not `updated_at`** | 7 days | Using `updated_at` would let an orphan's own read/re-hydration path reset its expiry indefinitely — the entire reason this class exists as `created_at`-clocked, not a stylistic choice. |
24
25 **These are stated as "Proposed" in `pii-governance.md`, not "Ruled," except `user_credential`'s no-independent-window rule.** This story implements the configured numbers; it is not this story's job to decide whether 24 months/30 days/7 days are the right numbers — that's Priya's/legal's call, already flagged as open in the source document.
26
27 ## Acceptance criteria (restated from `backlog.md` S11)
28
29 - [ ] Implements 05's addendum without re-deriving the transaction-boundary or batching reasoning (each `DeleteExpired` call is already one transaction per batch, per the DAO's own implementation).
30 - [ ] Loops `DeleteExpired` per `RetentionClass` until `Drained` is true, one class at a time, never a mixed/shared predicate — enforcement site: the sweep invocation loop's own structure.
31 - [ ] `DeleteExpired` is never called with a request-scoped context — the sweep's own job/scheduler context governs it. Enforcement site: the sweep invocation's context construction (the `CronJob`'s own pod lifecycle, not an inbound HTTP request), plus a test asserting an already-cancelled context returns before deleting anything (the DAO layer already has this test per LT-38; this story's own test confirms the *caller* doesn't accidentally pass a request-scoped one).
32 - [ ] `SweepResult.OldestSurvivingAt` is published to 04's observability **only from a `Drained == true` result** — a non-drained batch reports progress, not health, per `observability.md`'s explicit warning that getting this wrong "means the alert fires on every sweep and gets muted, which is worse than not having it." Enforcement site: the metrics-emission code path, gated on `Drained`.
33 - [ ] Metrics emitted per class per run: `rows_examined`, `rows_deleted`, `oldest_surviving_row_age_seconds{class="direct"|"idp_cache"|"idp_cache_orphan"}` — matching `observability.md`'s exact label values (not the earlier-corrected, invented `vendor_token_cache`/`idp_identity_cache` names that document itself flagged and fixed).
34 - [ ] `DeleteProfile` is the only path used for a subject-deletion request; ordinary application deletes still go through `Profiles().Delete` (no log row) — this distinction is preserved, not collapsed for convenience.
35 - [ ] The `Drained`/`OldestSurvivingAt` coupling gets a one-line doc comment at the field declaration (Oren's note) — already present in the DAO's own code per LT-42's completeness sweep; this story doesn't need to add it again, just not remove or contradict it.
36 - [ ] **The `CronJob` runs against `api-service`'s existing image** (a `--sweep` mode or distinct entrypoint), not a new image build — matching team-lead's stated "half-day story" framing; a new image/Dockerfile would be disproportionate scope for what this needs.
37 - [ ] **Bounded by the existing `maxRows` per call** — the sweep doesn't invent a new batching parameter; it uses the DAO's own already-validated `1..10_000` bound.
38 - [ ] **Audited** — every deletion this sweep performs writes exactly one `deletion_log` row via the DAO's own transaction (already guaranteed by the DAO layer per LT-38's test); this story's job is only to confirm it doesn't bypass that path.
39 - [ ] **Added per Tobias's objection:** the sweep `CronJob` sets `concurrencyPolicy: Forbid` — Kubernetes' default (`Allow`) would let a slow-running sweep (plausible on the *first* real run, with no prior sweep history and a possible real backlog across all three classes) overlap with its own next scheduled invocation, matching the exact "two schedulers hit the same tables concurrently" risk this project already solved once for the migration `Job` in LT-45 ("only one migration run can reach the migrate stage at a time... enforced by the pipeline's own concurrency group/mutex"), but never carried forward to this `CronJob`. Beyond wasted DB load, two overlapping sweeps for the same class could each independently reach `Drained == true` and each emit `oldest_surviving_row_age_seconds` for that class in the same window — a confusing, duplicate signal undermining the one metric criterion 5's alert rule depends on. `Forbid` silently skips an overlapping run rather than overlapping it — a skipped run must itself be visible in observability (a metric or log line noting the previous run was still active), so a sweep that's perpetually behind schedule doesn't fail silently either.
40
41 ## Non-goals
42
43 - No new DAO methods, no schema changes — `DeleteExpired`/`DeleteProfile` and `deletion_log` already exist and are tested.
44 - No change to the retention windows themselves (24 months/30 days/7 days) — those are Priya's/legal's numbers, implemented as configured, not re-litigated here.
45 - No new container image — reuses `api-service`'s existing image in a new invocation mode.
46 - No subject-deletion-request *API endpoint* — `backlog.md`'s S11 wires the DAO-level `DeleteProfile` path; whether/how an external caller triggers a subject-deletion request (a support-tool button, an API route) is a separate, unscoped question not raised by this story's own criteria.
47
48 ## PO review script
49
50 1. Confirm the `CronJob` manifest invokes `api-service`'s existing image, not a new one.
51 2. Confirm the sweep loop calls `DeleteExpired` per class until `Drained`, never a mixed predicate — read the invocation code directly.
52 3. Confirm the sweep's context is the job's own, not request-scoped — read the code, confirm the cancelled-context test exists at this layer too (not just the DAO's own, already-covered test).
53 4. Confirm metrics are emitted with the correct label values (`direct`/`idp_cache`/`idp_cache_orphan`), only from `Drained == true` results.
54 5. Confirm the alert rule (`oldest_surviving_row_age_seconds{class="X"} > retention_window + sweep_interval`) is actually configured in 04's monitoring, not just theoretically possible from the emitted metric.
55 5a. **Added per Tobias's objection:** read the `CronJob` manifest directly and confirm `concurrencyPolicy: Forbid` is set, not the Kubernetes default `Allow`; confirm a skipped-due-to-overlap run is itself visible in observability (a metric or log line), not silently invisible.
56 6. Once deployed: confirm the `CronJob` actually runs on schedule (check its last-run status via `kubectl get cronjob`/`kubectl get jobs`) and that at least one run reports real `rows_examined`/`rows_deleted` numbers, not zero-across-the-board from day one (which would be consistent with either a genuinely empty table or a broken sweep — the seeded demo profiles, if old enough, are one way to get a non-trivial signal; otherwise this criterion is "ran without erroring," not "deleted something").
57
58 ## Research team review
59
60 **Desmond Okafor — claims check:** Verified the full retention-class/window/clock table and every metrics/label requirement word-for-word against `pii-governance.md` and `observability.md` directly — all accurate. Independently re-checked the DAO-level test claims (rather than trusting his own earlier LT-42 sweep, which hadn't actually named this specific package) — found every cited test present in `internal/dao/conformance/conformance_test.go`, plus the `Drained`/`OldestSurvivingAt` doc comment in `retention.go`. No corrections needed.
61
62 **Tobias Lindqvist — objection:** The `CronJob` had no stated `concurrencyPolicy`, leaving Kubernetes' default `Allow` in place — a slow first-ever sweep run (plausible, given no prior sweep history and a possible real backlog) could overlap with its own next scheduled invocation, recreating the exact "two schedulers hit the same tables concurrently" risk this project already solved once for the migration `Job` in LT-45, never carried forward here. Beyond wasted load, overlapping sweeps could each independently emit `oldest_surviving_row_age_seconds` for the same class, undermining the one metric the alert rule depends on being trustworthy. Counter-proposal accepted: `concurrencyPolicy: Forbid`, plus a requirement that a skipped-due-to-overlap run be itself visible in observability, not silently invisible.
63
64 **Naomi Voss — ruling:** Fix applied. This refinement is accepted and ready to hand off. This is the fourth story in this chain where a pattern already established elsewhere in the project (single-in-flight discipline on the migration `Job`) wasn't carried forward to a structurally identical new component — worth naming as its own recurring category, alongside the NetworkPolicy-scoping pattern Tobias already flagged on LT-52.

"description": "Find sweep metric spec in observability.md"
}33:## Retention-sweep observability (05's S5 requirement, final)
35:Per `../05-data-ops/pii-governance.md`: the retention sweep must emit, per data class per run, three metrics — rows examined, rows deleted, and **the age of the oldest surviving row in that class**. An alert fires when that age exceeds the class's stated retention window plus one sweep interval. This is the one metric in this document tied to a specific reasoning worth repeating: a sweep job that silently stops running produces no error and no symptom on its own — "rows deleted" can't tell a broken sweep from a legitimately empty one, since both report zero. Oldest-surviving-row age is the one number that keeps climbing when the job is dead and holds steady when it's healthy, which is why it's the alerting signal, not just a nice-to-have metric alongside the other two.
37:Mechanism: the sweep job (whatever invokes it — a CronJob against the lab cluster, per 05's mechanism-agnostic requirement) emits these as Prometheus metrics with a `class` label matching 05's actual retention classes — `source="direct"`, `source="idp_cache"`, and `idp_cache_orphan` for an orphaned `idp_cache` row (`../05-data-ops/pii-governance.md`), never a label carrying the PII itself, same discipline as the RED-metrics rule above. (An earlier draft of this section invented `vendor_token_cache`/`idp_identity_cache` as class names — those don't correspond to anything 05 tracks and described a connector token cache the S3 ruling never adopted; corrected here.) The alert rule is `oldest_surviving_row_age_seconds{class="X"} > (retention_window_seconds + sweep_interval_seconds)`, evaluated per class.
39:**Batched sweeps: only a drained result feeds the metric.** 05's `DeleteExpired` is batched (a bounded `maxRows` per call, `SweepResult.Drained` marking the last batch of a sweep) — `OldestSurvivingAt` is meaningful only on a `Drained == true` result, since mid-sweep the oldest deletable row is still present by construction and would read as stale on every batch but the last. The sweep job emits `oldest_surviving_row_age_seconds` only from drained results, never from an intermediate batch; the alert rule above already only ever sees what's published, so this is a constraint on what the job emits, not an extra filter the alert needs to apply. Getting this wrong means the alert fires on every sweep and gets muted, which is worse than not having it.
49:No SLOs/error-budget policy, no alerting-rule catalog beyond the retention-sweep alert above. A take-home needs the shape of an observability approach and a credible enforcement mechanism for the one hard requirement (never-log); it doesn't need a full SRE runbook.{

"description": "Check how metrics are actually exported/scraped in this project"
}15:Standard RED metrics (rate, errors, duration) per endpoint, via Prometheus client library, scraped by whatever the lab cluster already runs (not stood up new for this take-home). Labels: method, route, status class — never a label with cardinality tied to user data (no `sub` or phone number as a metric label; that turns a metrics backend into an accidental PII store with no access control at all, which is a worse leak than a log line since metrics systems are typically more widely readable).
(An earlier draft of this section invented `vendor_token_cache`/`idp_identity_cache` as class names — those don't correspond to anything 05 tracks and described a connector token cache the S3 ruling never adopted; corrected here.) "summary": "Agree image entrypoint/args + metrics format for LT-44 sweep",
"message": "Starting LT-44's sweep-invocation code (03's side) — before I open the PR, PM asked us to agree the image entrypoint/args so your CronJob manifest and my code land together cleanly. Proposing, open to your preference:\n\n- **Entrypoint:** reuse `cmd/api-service`'s existing image, no new build. A new flag on the same binary, e.g. `api-service --sweep`, that runs the retention sweep once (loops DeleteExpired per RetentionClass until Drained, per refinement/LT-44.md) and exits — never starts the HTTP server. Alternative: a distinct `cmd/sweep-worker` entrypoint in the same image if you'd rather your CronJob's command not overload api-service's normal args. Let me know which you'd rather point the CronJob at.\n- **Config:** DB_DRIVER/DB_DSN (or _FILE) reused as-is from the existing config surface — no new DB config needed. Retention windows (24mo/30d/7d) and maxRows are hardcoded constants per the refinement doc's own \"not this story's job to decide the numbers\" framing, not new env vars — let me know if you'd rather they be configurable for ops flexibility.\n- **Metrics:** observability.md says \"emits these as Prometheus metrics\" but doesn't specify a scrape/push mechanism for what's necessarily a short-lived batch job. My plan, unless you tell me your sink expects something else: structured stdout log lines in a simple `metric_name{label=\"value\"}=N` shape (Prometheus exposition-line-compatible), one line per metric per class per run, only for Drained==true on oldest_surviving_row_age_seconds. If you're standing up a Pushgateway or a log-based scraper, tell me the exact format/library you need and I'll match it instead of guessing.\n- **concurrencyPolicy: Forbid + skipped-run visibility:** that's your manifest's job per the refinement doc (Tobias's objection) — I'll make sure my log output includes an obviously-greppable line if a sweep run is skipped is out of scope for me since Forbid is enforced by Kubernetes itself before my process ever starts; just flagging so you know my code has no \"detect I was skipped\" logic to write, that's entirely your CronJob config.\n\nWhat's your preference on entrypoint and metrics format? I'll implement to match once I hear back, or proceed with the above defaults if you're heads-down and it doesn't matter to you.",

}13:- **`source = 'direct'`** — profile created through this system's own registration flow. Retention window is a product/legal decision this track doesn't own outright, but the schema supports enforcing whatever window is chosen: `created_at`/`updated_at` plus a scheduled deletion job keyed on those columns. 14:- **`source = 'idp_cache'`** — profile hydrated from a third-party IDP connector's `/identity` response. This data is subject to the **same retention obligation as directly-collected PII** — caching it does not reset or relax that obligation. If anything it adds a vendor-processor relationship on top: this system is now downstream custodian of another party's collected PII, which should be documented as a data-flow (third-party collection → this system → disposal) rather than left implicit. 16:Tagging cache rows distinctly by `source` is what makes a targeted deletion request or a bulk retention sweep possible without touching directly-collected profiles by accident. 32:| `user_profile`, `source='direct'` | `updated_at` | **24 months** since last update | *unknown — needs product/legal ruling.* Engineering basis only: long enough that a dormant account surviving a slow re-engagement cycle is not destroyed, short enough to be a defensible answer to "why do you still hold this." No regulation supplies this number | Hard delete | Cascade FK destroys all `user_credential` rows — the account stops existing | unknown — no named legal owner on this POC | Proposed | 33:| `user_profile`, `source='idp_cache'` | `updated_at` | **30 days** since last hydration | Engineering: **a cache is not a record.** Re-hydration costs one `/identity` call, so deleting too early costs a vendor round-trip. Vendor data also goes stale — a 14-month-old cached address is a correctness problem before it is a privacy one. We are downstream custodian of another party's collected PII with no independent relationship to the subject, which argues for the shortest window that still functions | Hard delete | Cascade FK; a cached profile should not normally have credentials — if it does, it is no longer merely a cache and product must say which clock wins | unknown | Proposed | 34:| `user_profile`, `source='idp_cache'`, **no referencing `user_credential`** (orphaned cache) | **`created_at`**, deliberately not `updated_at` | **7 days** since creation | Engineering: lookup residue, not an account — someone called `/identity`, we cached the answer, nothing was ever built on it. **The clock is `created_at` because `updated_at` is touched by the read and re-hydration path: an orphan re-read on any schedule would keep resetting its own expiry and never die.** Closing that loop is the entire reason this row exists | Hard delete | Nothing — by definition it has no children | unknown | Proposed | 50:2. **The reverse does not hold.** Deleting a credential leaves the profile standing. **A user who removes their last login method still has PII in this database, running on the `direct` clock.** If product wants "removing your last credential deletes the account," that is a policy decision, not a schema one — and it is currently *not* what the schema does. 62:| **IDP re-hydration overwrite** | Existing `idp_cache` profile matched on the lookup key, fresh `/identity` response | One row | **None** — the profile id is stable across re-hydration, so credentials survive | Upsert in place; old field values are **gone, not versioned** | None, and none wanted | Nothing — request-path behaviour, not a job | n/a — but see the clock-reset note above | 99:- `02-ai-security-architecture` should build credential hashing (algorithm, cost factor, salt handling) on top of the `secret`/`hash_algo`/`hash_cost` columns already reserved in the schema — flagged directly to Marcus once this schema landed.

2
3 Go implementation of all three assignment questions — the DAO layer (Q1), the REST search/retrieve API with authentication (Q2), and the third-party identity connector (Q3) — plus the glue between Q2 and Q3. See root `../CLAUDE.md` for the full assignment text and how this track fits the other four; this file covers only what this track built, what's stubbed, and how.
4
5 ## What's implemented — live, deployed, verified against the running system
6
7 - **Q1 — DAO layer** (`internal/dao`, `internal/dao/postgres`, `internal/dao/sqlite`): `user_profile`/`user_credential` storage behind one `Repository` interface, real implementations for Postgres/CockroachDB and SQLite. Verified against the actually-deployed Postgres database, and in CI against real Postgres and CockroachDB service containers (not mocked) — a cross-backend conformance suite (LT-38) asserts all three backends behave identically, not just that their Go signatures match.
8 - **Q2 — REST API** (`internal/api`, `internal/app`): `POST /profiles/search`, `GET /profiles/{id}`, and a real RFC 6749 client-credentials `POST /auth/token` grant, all behind RS256 JWT verification. Verified live at `https://loginid-takehome.uplifttech.org` with real minted tokens, including rate-limiting, masked-vs-full-read scoping, and pagination.
9 - **Q3 — connector** (`internal/connector`, `cmd/idp-connector`): the third-party IDP connector's own inbound `/auth`/`/identity` contract. Verified in-cluster via `kubectl port-forward` with a real vendor stub backing it — happy path, audience rejection, fail-closed identical-content error responses, a timing floor on the three internal failure branches, and a failure-ratio rate limiter actually firing under a live failed-auth burst, not just asserted in a unit test.
10 - **api-service → idp-connector integration** (`internal/onboarding`, LT-33): api-service's own outbound call to the connector, closing the loop between Q2 and Q3 — its own cached, refreshed OAuth2 client-credentials token; bounded timeouts and retry-with-backoff on connector calls; a generic upward failure on any connector-unreachable condition, with own-token-acquisition failures logged as a distinct class.
11 - CI/CD, containerization, secrets delivery, and database provisioning (04's stories, LT-45/46/47/52) are all Done and live — `pr-check` runs this track's tests against real Postgres and CockroachDB service containers on every PR, not just SQLite.
12
13 ## Deliberately stubbed — stated plainly, not left to infer
14
15 - **The third-party vendor (ABC/XYZ) is an in-process `StubVendorClient`**, not a real HTTP integration. `idp-connector` falls back to it whenever `IDP_ABC_BASE_URL` is unset, and says so explicitly on startup. The assignment names the vendor generically — a real integration was never in scope (`refinement/LT-41.md`'s own stated non-goal).
16 - **The `authorize()` object-level policy hook is a `StopgapAuthorizer`**, a hard-coded, default-deny stand-in — not the real caller-referral datastore `../02-ai-security-architecture/handoff-03-auth.md`'s own design describes. A stated seam, not a hidden gap.
17 - **CockroachDB and SQLite are exercised in CI only, never deployed live.** Only Postgres runs in the actual cluster (LT-52's explicit scope limit) — don't go looking for a running CockroachDB instance anywhere.
18 - **No `POST /profiles` write endpoint exists or is planned.** Q2 is search/retrieve by the assignment's own text; a write path was ruled out as scope creep. Review/demo data enters via a version-controlled, idempotent SQL file (`deploy/demo-data/001-review-profiles.sql`), applied as a documented runbook step, never through the API.
19 - **Rate limiting, the touch counter, and the token issuer's grant limiter are in-process and single-replica-only.** Their own code comments say a shared store (Redis) would be needed for a genuine multi-instance deployment — this project runs `api-service`/`api-service-issuer` at 1 replica with a `Recreate` rollout strategy *specifically* so this simplification holds correctly rather than silently degrading under a rolling update. That constraint exists because of a real bug this project found live (see below), not as a hypothetical caveat.
20 - **The retention sweep (LT-44) is designed and enforced at the schema/DAO level, but not yet operationally running.** `DeleteExpired`/`DeleteProfile` exist on the DAO composite and are tested there directly; nothing yet schedules or calls them against the live database. `../05-data-ops/pii-governance.md`'s retention policy is a real, tracked, backlogged story, not an abandoned requirement.
21
22 ## Package layout
23
24 `cmd/api-service` and `cmd/idp-connector` are both thin wrappers — argument parsing and `main()` only. Route registration and config loading live once, in `internal/app` and `internal/config`, shared by both binaries rather than duplicated per binary (see `decisions/go-layout-debate.md` below). `internal/api` holds Q2's HTTP handlers, JWT middleware, rate limiting, and the token issuer; `internal/connector` holds Q3's inbound handlers and outbound vendor client; `internal/onboarding` holds LT-33's mediating client from `api-service` to the connector; `internal/dao` and its `postgres`/`sqlite` subpackages hold Q1, behind one `Repository` interface `internal/dao/conformance` tests identically across backends.
25
26 ## Test strategy
27
28 Unit-heavy; integration deliberately stubbed where the assignment itself doesn't require full end-to-end coverage. Real-backend correctness (Postgres/CockroachDB/SQLite conformance, the CockroachDB serialization-retry path) is proven against real databases, in CI, not mocked — `internal/dao/conformance`'s own suite is the one enforcement site for "do the backends behave alike," distinct from a signature-matching test that proves nothing about behavior.
29
30 ## AI tooling and workflow
31
32 Every implementation story in this track's backlog runs at `sonnet, high` except the connector (`idp-connector`'s `/auth`/`/identity`, Q3), which runs at `opus, high` — the one seat above sonnet in this track, per `../02-ai-security-architecture/planning-approach.md`'s connector-token-lifecycle exception: a subtle bug in that specific code path (a leaked or misscoped vendor token) directly contradicts this project's own threat model in a way most of this track's other code doesn't.
33
34 Beyond model selection, implementation decisions in this track ran through structured adversarial review rather than being decided unilaterally:
35 - `decisions/go-layout-debate.md` — a three-hats debate (optimist/pessimist/pragmatist) on one binary vs. two, ruling to keep two binaries (already published and built against by 04) but merge the *authoring* cost via a shared `internal/app` package, plus a concrete requirement (bounded timeouts, no tight-looping retries on outbound calls) adopted from the pessimist's production-incident pattern-matching.
36 - `decisions/error-semantics.md` — a rotating devil's-advocate pass (Oren Castellan) that closed the sentinel-error set, forced a translation boundary so wrapped DB errors never leak driver text to an API client, and added explicit handling for `context.DeadlineExceeded`/`Canceled`.
37 - `decisions/context-propagation.md` — a second rotating devil's-advocate pass (Nolan Reyes, drawing on production-incident pattern-matching) that scoped multi-statement writes to a transaction under context cancellation, and named which write paths deliberately detach from the inbound context for durability.
38 - `decisions/test-double-strategy.md` — a third rotating devil's-advocate pass (Marisol Ferran) that weighed hand-written fakes against generated mocks; hand-written fakes stood, with the interface-drift risk closed procedurally (the PR-template checklist line above), not by adopting a codegen tool.
39
40 This project is also a broader org-orchestration exercise — a PM agent coordinating five track leads, each running a small hired sub-team with deliberately varied personalities, using patterns like adversarial pairs, red/blue, and structured written debate (`../PLAN.md`, `../CASTING.md`) — the four decisions above are this track's own instance of that same structure, not a separate practice invented for engineering work alone.
41
42 ## Real, live-tested findings
43
44 This track's own delivery process included live acceptance review against the actually-deployed system, not only code review and unit tests — and that process found and helped fix four real, distinct production-shaped bugs, each named individually rather than lumped together:
45
46 1. **A CI coverage gap**, where `pr-check` silently *skipped* every Postgres and CockroachDB conformance test — only SQLite genuinely ran — while still reporting an overall green build. Fixed two ways: real Postgres/CockroachDB service containers added to the CI job, and every affected test fixture changed to fail loudly (not skip) when a required backend DSN is absent specifically in CI.
47 2. Fixed by moving `api-service`/`api-service-issuer` to a single replica with a `Recreate` rollout strategy (04's story), a deliberate scope limit stated plainly above, not a silent workaround.
48 3. **`api-service`'s own Q2 token issuer/verifier wiring shipped with `AUTH_JWT_ISSUER`/`AUTH_JWT_AUDIENCE` unset** in its Kubernetes manifest — minted tokens carried no `iss` and were checked against an empty `aud`, "verifying" successfully for the wrong reason rather than failing loudly. Fixed in the manifest, plus a startup check (`cmd/api-service`) that now refuses to start with either unset, and a URL-shape check on the JWKS/issuer values specifically (a non-empty but garbage value is caught too, not just an absent one).
49 4. Fixed the same way: the manifest, plus a startup check in `cmd/idp-connector` itself, plus a systemic test (`internal/config`'s manifest-vs-config test) that now parses every real Kubernetes Deployment manifest and asserts it sets everything its own mode requires — closing this specific class of gap structurally, in CI, rather than relying on a fourth live incident to catch the next occurrence.
50
51 Naming these precisely — which subsystem, which variable, which fix — is itself part of what this AI-workflow note is meant to demonstrate: verification against the live, deployed system, not only against a test suite or a design doc.

Any row seeded before this change must be re-seeded (re-run step 1 for a new secret, then the rotation `UPDATE` in "Rotation / revocation" below) before it will verify again. Per Priya's ruling on LT-51: "migrations carry reference data, never credentials" — the QA client row in `oauth_client` is seeded by hand, directly against the issuer database's own migrator role, never through a migration file, never through the CI-applied manifest set (`deploy/rbac.yaml` grants the deployer nothing on `secrets`, so it has no path to this credential regardless), and never with the plaintext secret or its hash committed anywhere in this repo. ## 1. Generate the secret and its Argon2id hash ``` CLIENT_SECRET=$(openssl rand -hex 24) go run deploy/gen-argon2-hash.go "$CLIENT_SECRET" > /tmp/qa-hash.txt HASH=$(cat /tmp/qa-hash.txt) rm -f /tmp/qa-hash.txt ``` `deploy/gen-argon2-hash.go` produces a standard PHC-format Argon2id hash (`«REDACTED-ARGON2»`) — the same self-describing encoding `user_credential.secret` already uses, and what `internal/api/clientstore.go`'s `verifySecret` reads its cost parameters back from (never assumed to match the app's own current constants — Priya Nandakumar's ruling, `handoff-03-auth.md` v7). Verified by round-tripping a test hash through the app's own comparison logic before this runbook was written, not assumed from reading the source, and again by a permanent test (`internal/api/clientstore_test.go`'s hand-constructed-different-parameters case) that fails if the verifier is ever changed to ignore the embedded parameters. **Give `$CLIENT_SECRET` to whoever will run the PO review script and nowhere else** — it is the Basic-auth password for `POST /auth/token`. It cannot be recovered from `$HASH` afterward; if lost, generate a new secret and re-run step 2 (an `UPDATE`, not a fresh `INSERT`). ## 2. Insert the row

(b) obtain a real token via `POST /auth/token` using the seeded QA credential. (c) hit `/profiles/search` and `/profiles/{id}` at the live URL against the seeded rows — confirming a masked response, a full read with a `reason_code`, 401/403 exactly as LT-39's tests predict, and an actual 429 once the touch cap is crossed. This is the review LT-34/LT-39/LT-40/LT-51 have all been building toward; all four are accepted together in this one pass.{

/Users/warrenthompson/Source/LoginID/03-engineering-delivery/refinement/LT-39.md:82:**Real defect found and reproduced live, not from code alone: the per-minute `RateLimiter` (10 req/min search) does not reliably enforce its stated limit.** `api-service` runs 2 replicas; `RateLimiter` is in-process (per-pod memory) — its own code comment states this is "a deliberate simplification, not hidden — a production multi-instance deployment would need a shared store (Redis) instead," but the deployed manifest runs 2 replicas anyway. Reproduced: a 12-call rapid burst produced zero 429s (load-balanced roughly evenly across both pods, each staying under its own independent count of 10); a subsequent 30-call burst started producing 429s at call 9, at a point with no fixed relationship to the stated "10 req/min." The effective limit is somewhere between 10–20 depending on load-balancer distribution, not a real per-client cap. `TouchCounter` and `GrantLimiter` share the identical in-process, per-pod design (confirmed by reading their source) and almost certainly have the same gap, though I could not exercise `TouchCounter`'s cap live — see below.
/Users/warrenthompson/Source/LoginID/03-engineering-delivery/refinement/LT-39.md:86:**Ruling (team-lead):** `api-service` moves from 2 replicas to 1 (matching the issuer Deployment's own replica count) — a security control beats nominal HA for a POC at this scale; Redis remains the documented production-scale path (already stated in the code's own comments), not something to build now. Re-run the rate-limit burst test after Theo's manifest PR redeploys.
/Users/warrenthompson/Source/LoginID/03-engineering-delivery/refinement/LT-39.md:94:Re-ran the 12-request rapid burst against the search QA client's 10 req/min limit: **`200 200 200 200 200 200 200 200 200 200 429 429`** — exactly 10 allowed, 429 from request 11 onward. Deterministic and matching the stated design precisely, unlike the pre-fix runs (which ranged unpredictably from 0/12 to 429-at-9/30 depending on load-balancer distribution across 2 replicas). Both Tobias's rolling-update objection and Desmond's independent confirmation are now moot in practice — `Recreate` means there is never a second pod to split load across, at any point including during a deploy.
/Users/warrenthompson/Source/LoginID/03-engineering-delivery/refinement/LT-39.md:105:- Per-minute `RateLimiter` (10 req/min search / 60 req/min read) — **verified by unit test only; live verification pending the replica fix.** The reproduced cross-replica gap above is real and was live, but it's a deployment-topology defect the replica-count ruling addresses, not a defect in the limiter's own logic (which the unit tests already correctly cover for a single instance).
/Users/warrenthompson/Source/LoginID/03-engineering-delivery/refinement/LT-40.md:31:- [ ] The resource-API rate limiter and touch counter already built in LT-39 are wired to real, JWT-derived `AuthContext.Sub` values once this middleware populates them — **no new implementation, an integration check**: a live-URL test with a real token confirms the 60/10 req/min limits and the touch cap actually apply per real client identity, not per a test fake's hardcoded value.
/Users/warrenthompson/Source/LoginID/03-engineering-delivery/refinement/LT-40.md:90:**One real, reproduced gap, shared with LT-39/LT-51 (not new to this story specifically, but this story owns the middleware layer it runs through):** the resource-API `RateLimiter` doesn't reliably enforce its stated per-minute cap across `api-service`'s 2 replicas — see the full writeup in `refinement/LT-39.md`, which owns that component. Recorded here because it's exercised through this story's middleware/wiring, not because LT-40 needs a separate fix for it.
/Users/warrenthompson/Source/LoginID/03-engineering-delivery/refinement/LT-43.md:35: 2. A cross-replica rate-limiting bug in `api-service`'s own resource-API rate limiter, reproduced by actually crossing the 10 req/min cap live against 2 running replicas.

}1 # Track 03: Engineering & Delivery
Verified against the actually-deployed Postgres database, and in CI against real Postgres and CockroachDB service containers — `.github/workflows/pr-check.yml`'s `build-lint-test` job sets `TEST_POSTGRES_DSN`/`TEST_COCKROACHDB_DSN` and runs `go test ./...` against them directly; reproduce locally by setting those two env vars to a running Postgres/CockroachDB instance and running the same command (no docker-compose step of this repo's own — `pr-check.yml` uses GitHub Actions service containers). A cross-backend conformance suite (`internal/dao/conformance`, LT-38) asserts all three backends behave identically, not just that their Go signatures match.
8 - **Q2 — REST API** (`internal/api`, `internal/app`): `POST /profiles/search`, `GET /profiles/{id}`, and a real RFC 6749 client-credentials `POST /auth/token` grant, all behind RS256 JWT verification. Verified live at `https://loginid-takehome.uplifttech.org` with real minted tokens; the exact commands run are the PO review scripts in `refinement/LT-39.md`/`LT-40.md`/`LT-51.md`. Three distinct in-process controls, easy to conflate by name, so defined separately here: `internal/api.RateLimiter` (a per-minute cap per client credential — 60 req/min for read scopes, 10 req/min for search); `internal/api.TouchCounter` (a separate, 24-hour cumulative distinct-record-touch cap per client, aimed at slow enumeration rather than bursts); `internal/api.GrantLimiter` (backoff on repeated failed `/auth/token` grant attempts, keyed by client+source IP — a different mechanism from the two above, and also reused as-is by the connector, see Q3 below). All three are exercised live in the PO review scripts above.
9 - **Q3 — connector** (`internal/connector`, `cmd/idp-connector`): the third-party IDP connector's own inbound `/auth`/`/identity` contract. Verified in-cluster via `kubectl -n loginid-takehome port-forward svc/idp-connector 8081:443` with a real vendor stub backing it (`refinement/LT-41.md`'s own PO review script has the full command sequence) — happy path, audience rejection, fail-closed identical-content error responses, a timing floor on the three internal failure branches, and a second rate-limit dimension specific to this connector (`internal/connector.identityRateLimiter`, keyed by *which identity* was attempted, not just which caller — distinct from `api.GrantLimiter` above, which the connector also reuses for its caller+IP dimension) actually firing under a live failed-auth burst, not just asserted in a unit test.
16 - **The `authorize()` object-level policy hook is a `StopgapAuthorizer`** (`internal/api/stopgap_authorizer.go`), a hard-coded, default-deny stand-in — not the real caller-referral datastore `../02-ai-security-architecture/handoff-03-auth.md`'s own design describes. Scope is narrow and stated in its own doc comment: it only gates `profile:read:own`'s referral-membership check (a hard-coded `sub → allowed record id` map, currently just the one seeded QA client); `profile:read:any` is authorized entirely upstream of it (a valid `reason_code`, checked in the handler before this hook ever runs), and `profile:search` has no per-record target for it to gate at all — both of those paths return `true` unconditionally here, not because the check is real, but because this stand-in has no real `caller_referral` data to consult for them. A stated seam, not a hidden gap.
Review/demo data enters via a version-controlled, idempotent SQL file (`deploy/demo-data/review-profiles.sql`), applied under the database's `migrator` role as a runbook step documented in `refinement/LT-51.md` (item 9(a) of its joint review script), never through the API.
19 - **`RateLimiter`, `TouchCounter`, and `GrantLimiter`** (all three defined above, under Q2) **are in-process and single-replica-only.** Their own code comments say a shared store (Redis) would be needed for a genuine multi-instance deployment — this project runs `api-service`/`api-service-issuer` at 1 replica with a `Recreate` rollout strategy *specifically* so this simplification holds correctly rather than silently degrading under a rolling update.
47 2. **A cross-replica rate-limiting bug** in `internal/api.RateLimiter` (the per-minute cap defined above under Q2, NOT `GrantLimiter` or `TouchCounter`), reproduced by actually crossing its 10 req/min search cap live against 2 running replicas — each replica's in-process limiter had no visibility into the other's request count, so the effective cap was silently doubled, and inconsistently (the exact overshoot depended on the load balancer's own distribution across pods). Fixed by moving `api-service`/`api-service-issuer` to a single replica with a `Recreate` rollout strategy (04's story), a deliberate scope limit stated plainly above, not a silent workaround. See `refinement/LT-39.md` for the full reproduction (both the pre-fix live burst test and the deterministic post-fix re-run).
Fixed in the manifest, plus a startup check in `cmd/api-service/main.go` (`validateAuthConfig`) that now refuses to start with either unset, and a URL-shape check (`internal/config.ValidateEnvVarValue`) on the JWKS/issuer values specifically (a non-empty but garbage value is caught too, not just an absent one).
49 4. Fixed the same way: the manifest, plus a startup check in `cmd/idp-connector/main.go` (`validateAuthConfig`), plus a systemic test (`internal/config/manifest_test.go`) that now parses every real Kubernetes Deployment manifest and asserts it sets everything its own mode requires — closing this specific class of gap structurally, in CI, rather than relying on a fourth live incident to catch the next occurrence.
50
51 Naming these precisely — which subsystem, which variable, which fix — is itself part of what this AI-workflow note is meant to demonstrate: verification against the live, deployed system, not only against a test suite or a design doc.
